Rules & questions

What counts as a page?

A page means a single numbered page, not a two-page spread.

Does "within four pages" include the hider's own page?

Yes. "Within four pages" and "no more than one page away" both include the hider's own page.

Which page is "facing opposite"?

The page opposite when the book lies flat. An even page faces the odd page after it: 2 faces 3, 4 faces 5, and so on.

What counts as "water in its name"?

Exactly these words in a chapter title: harbor, lake, creek, river, pond, brook, bay, shore, falls, springs. Nothing else counts.

Does "the first name on the page" mean a given name or the name at the top?

The name at the top of the page, first in reading order. Every name in the register is a first name.

Does "a repeated name" mean the same name twice on one page?

Yes. The same spelling, twice on the same numbered page.

Does "the chapter" mean every page in the chapter?

Yes. The four alibis can sit on any pages of the chapter, not just the hider's page.

How are letters counted?

Only A, E, I, O and U are vowels. Y is not. A consecutive repeated letter is the same letter twice in a row, like the N's in Anna. Read a page left to right, top to bottom, when counting "ten names away".

Do I count names I've already crossed out?

Yes. Crossing a name out does not remove it from the other clues. Every clue is checked against the full register.

Is Daniel in the register?

No. Neither is the woman he was on trial for. You are looking for the person hiding him.

Is there only one right answer?

Yes. Exactly one name fits all eighteen clues, and every clue is needed to get there. Skip one and you'll be left with more than one name.

Can I get a hint?

No hints. This page tells you right or wrong, one try every six hours. If you're wrong, go back to the clues you were least sure about.
